Group Matwork and Apparatus Class Etiquette

Arrive on Time with an Empty Stomach
Try to arrive 5-10 minutes before class is scheduled to begin. It is highly recommended that you do not eat a heavy meal 2 hours before Matwork. Retrieve any straps, blocks, pillows, Therabands, blankets, eye pillows, etc., before the class begins. Settle on to your mat and take these few extra minutes to relax and unwind in Savasana (Corpse Pose).

Please Leave your Shoes at the Door
Matwork is performed best in bare feet. However, you are encouraged to wear socks if you have any concerns and/or issues with foot disorders.

Leave your Worries at the Door
Allow yourself this time to focus on you. This is your hour and you deserve it!
Try to leave all stress inducing thoughts at the door, and enter with a smile and peace of mind.

Help Create Peace of Mind and Quiet
Please turn off your cell phone and/or beeper when you arrive.

Be Safe and Aware of your Body
Notify the instructor of any new injuries or limitations before class begins. Most postures and movements in Pilates and Yoga have modifications to accommodate these situations. Learn to work within yourself. Nothing in Yoga or Pilates should hurt. Matwork should be challenging but never painful. Pain is the body's way of telling you that you have gone too far too soon, or you have not healed a specific injury sufficiently to go further. Listen to your body and Learn its limits.

Focus on Yourself and Feel Confident
Try not to compare or compete with other practitioners. Both Yoga and Pilates are a personal growth experience. Both systems are designed to recreate your approach to exercise and movement for your individual body and lifestyle. This is not a contest! Each person will increase their flexibility and build strength at their own pace, based upon their own needs, limitations and physical condition.

Be Patient with Yourself
Change takes time and you must begin slowly, understanding that you will progress in stages. These movements and postures are meant to teach you a new way to connect to your body, Not conquer it! With regular practice and consistency, you will feel the benefits in a few weeks.

This is a Journey
Relax and enjoy the deep breathing, the stretching and the releasing of physical and emotional tension during your Matwork. Yoga and Pilates are a gift to yourself from yourself.
