Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Pilates?
Pilates (pi-LAH-teez) exercise, performed in the U.S. since the 1920's, is named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates. He was a boxer who studied anatomy, Yoga and Zen Meditation.

The Pilates Method is a full-body system of specifically sequenced exercises performed on a padded floor mat or specially designed equipment. The Method is centered around the concepts of awareness, balance, breath, centering, concentration, control, flowing movement, and precision. The principle of Pilates is to uniformly develop the mind and body.

Pilates was originally designed to be taught one on one, and is best taught by a comprehensively trained instructor. The depth of coursework and training your instructor has received will directly affect the outcome and results of your training.

Q: What type of Training Sessions do you offer?
Private - All Apparatus and Matwork - One on One w/Teacher
Duet/Partner - All Apparatus and Matwork - 2 Persons w/One Teacher
Trio/Semi-Private -All Apparatus and Matwork - 3 Persons w/One Teacher
Group Apparatus Classes - 5 Person Max
Group Matwork Classes- 8 Person Max

Q: How long are the sessions?
All Pilates sessions are 55 minutes in length.

Q: How do I start taking Pilates?
We highly recommend your first Pilates experience be a private session. Our Center requires that all new clients begin with a private Intro/Evaluation lesson. This will introduce you to the Pilates apparatus, allow the instructor to make an evaluation of your specific needs, and give you an idea of where your body is in terms of it's strengths and weaknesses.

Q: How many private sessions are recommended before taking Group Classes?
We recommend taking at least 10-20 private sessions before moving on to a group class environment. Every person is different, and there is no set rule. Your instructor will advise you and help you to determine when you are personally ready to move on to a group class.

Q: How many times a week should I do Pilates?
Two to three times a week is highly recommended. It is the best way to start your Pilates training. Consistency is the key to change. Once you are ready to move on to group sessions, you can incorporate the Group Matwork and Apparatus Classes with your private sessions.

Q: What should I wear?
Wear comfortable exercise clothes. Tights or Yoga Pants are recommended. Make sure that your attire is not too oversized, which will make it difficult for the instructor to observe your body during your session. Sneakers are not required; you will do your session in socks or bare feet. Jewelry and belts can be restrictive, and we recommend that they are removed before class.
